Cippenham Young Players' Summer Festival - 24-25 June 2023

The annual Cippenham Young Players' Summer Festival, an Table Tennis England accredited 1-star open tournament, was held at the end of June and proved successful yet again. A total of eighty-six players competed in eight events across two days although the numbers were much higher for the under-13 and under-15 events on Saturday than they were for the under-17 and under-19 events on Sunday.

The Sunday events proved to be quite a triumph for the local players with all four events being won players who train at Cippenham. In three of these events the runner-up was also from the Cippenham stable.

Success in the girls' events on the Sunday was shared between Cippenham's top two players, Rachael Iles and Mia Lakhani, who met in the final of both events. Mia beat Rachael in the Under-17s while the tables were reversed with Rachael winning the Under-19s.

Cippenham's William Saint also reached the final of both Sunday events for the boys. In the Under-17 final he was beaten by team-mate Jamie Woodford while later in the day, in the Under-19s, William took the title against Kent's Aniket Bhanushali. Surprisingly, Jamie was eliminated from the preliminary round group of the Under-19s after losing to fellow Cippenham players Jaiden Caldeira and Bharath Prasanna Kumar but then, unsurprisingly, went on to win the consolation event. Jaiden progressed to the semi-final where he lost out to Bhanushali

Lok Lam beat Violet Marquis in the finals of both the Under-13 and Under-15 girls' events on Saturday while the boys' events were won by Aiden Lees and Oscar Nikoli with Cippenham's youngest prodigy, nine-years old Sai Prasanna Kumar being the beaten finalist on both occasions.

The tournament was organised by Steve Piercey and refereed by Ken Phillips.
