Women's British League 2nd Weekend - 27-28 January 2018

Relegation looms for ladies’ teams

Relegation looms for both of Cippenham’s teams in the Women’s British League having finished in the bottom two positions in Division 4. Results for the second weekend, played at Sheffield, were similar to the first weekend with the only points gained being when the two teams played one another. Despite this, the A team were declared as Team of the Weekend!

The first match of the weekend pitched the two Cippenham teams against one another. With both Denise Weller and Julie Dean unavailable, the A team drafted in Shristi Ghosh to play alongside Wendy Porter and Sue Hayes. The match was not as straight-forward as the final score of 6-0 might suggest as two of the six sets required a fifth and deciding game and only one was decided 3-0.

Shristi was Cippenham A’s only winner in the second match, a 5-1 defeat to Stantek Old Sports and Saturday’s play finished on a low note with a 6-0 drubbing by XLNT Draycott 4.

Shristi was again the only contributor on Sunday morning, beating Georgia Harris as Cippenham A again lost 5-1, this time to divisional champions Burton Uxbridge 3. A disappointing weekend ended with a further 6-0 defeat, this time at the hands of Cliffedale Chargers.

The Cippenham B team were faring no better. Their defeat to Cippenham A was followed by another 6-0 defeat to Draycott but then things improved, especially for Holly Long as she beat both Morgan Sykes and Georgia Harris of Burton Uxbridge. However, her teams mates, Lucie Bouron and Carys Evans, could not assist and the final match score was 4-2 in Burton’s favour.

Sunday brought two further defeats, 6-0 against Cliffedale and then 5-1 against Stantek with the highlight being Carys’ five-game victory over Kim Selfe.
