VETTS Super 60s Team Competition - 13/14 January 2024

Cippenham once again entered a women's team into the VETTS Super 60s team competition played at Grantham over the weekend. This was the second year of this competition, it having commenced in November 2022.

Team captain Denise Weller was unfortunately injured and not able to participate this year and so Scottish player Senga Thomson was recruited along with Hampshire's Celia Hooker. The team played five matches, winning three, drawing one and losing one.

Mary Heffernan was, for the second season, Cippenham's most successful player, winning all eight of her individual matches. Sue Hayes won six out of eight, Senga four out of six and Celia four out of eight.

The two-day event started on Saturday morning during which Cippenham started immaculately, beating The Lady Charm 6-0 with two wins each for Mary, Sue and Celia. The lunchtime match provided another win, this time 5-1 over JMS. Mary and Senga each scored a brace while Sue was defeated 13-11 in the fifth and deciding game by Sally Bax. However, the winning run came to an end in the late afternoon when Cippenham were beaten 4-2 by divisional winners Swerve Movers. Mary won her usual two, in easy style as it happens, whereas Senga and Celia were unable to add to the tally despite Celia being 2-1 up on Jane Lynas and only losing the fifth 9-11.

Bottom-placed Rugby Rebels, who have yet to win a solitary set over the two seasons, were easily defeated 6-0 on Sunday morning and so the final match of the weekend then became a shoot-out for second place against The Supremes. When Cippenham led 3-1, courtesy of two from Mary and one from Sue, it looked as if Cippenham could repeat the runners-up spot they held in the competition's inaugural season. However, Katherine McIntyre and Janet Brown proved too strong for Celia and Sue respectively and the 3-3 result condemned Cippenham to third spot behind their opponents.
