The Cippenham team enjoyed a successful day in the Senior British League on Saturday (11th). Two 8-1 victories enabled them to climb two places to third in the National Division B-4 table and they are now firmly rooted in the top half of the table with a four-point gap between them and the bottom half.

The day commenced with a match against Somerset Sabres who started the day on equal points with Cippenham but one place higher in the league table.

Robert Hansell got Cippenham off to the perfect start with a 3-1 win over Bertie Kelly and captain Martin Adams extended the lead with a similar score against Marcin Szram. Steve Munson was made to work hard and had to retrieve a 2-1 deficit in order to defeat Marcus Holba over five games and then Martin Gray made the score 4-0 to Cippenham with a more straight-forward 3-0 victory over David Hadley. Martin Adams and Robert then teamed up in the doubles for a win which secured for Cippenham the second league point, even though this was a hard-fought encounter. The first reverse for Cippenham followed as Martin Adams lost in four games to Kelly before Robert, Martin Gray and Steve wrapped up the match and were barely troubled in the final three sets.

Bottom team Haywards Heath were Cippenham’s opponents in the afternoon. Martin Adams just about got Cippenham away with a last-ditch win over Keigo Burnham in a match where three of the five games were decided at deuce. Robert, over Amila Thilakarathne, and Martin Gray, over Edward Harvey, won their matches much more comfortably to extend Cippenham’s lead to 3-0 before Sally Hughes scored Haywards Heath’s only success against Steve. A win in the doubles and then Martin Adams’ 11-9 fifth-game success over Thilakarathne led to a score of 5-1 and both league points for Cippenham. After that, Martin Gray, Robert and Steve wrapped up the last three sets much as they had done in the morning.

Robert and Martin Gray finished the day undefeated and shared the nominations of player of the match with one each.
