Maidenhead Closed Championships - 11 March 2023

It was business as usual at the Maidenhead Closed Championships of 2023. Both main titles were retained from the previous year, Maciej Dlugozima winning the Championship Singles and then combining with Hari Prasad to take the Championship Doubles.

Maciej's singles victory was his third in succession and fourth overall, having won previously in 2018, 2020 and 2022. However, it was not so straight-forward for the player with a hundred percent win record in the League this season. His doubles partner, Hari Prasad, pushed him very hard in the final and Maciej also had to pull out all the stops to defeat Parminder Singh in a close semi-final that required all five games to decide the winner. However, the top seed prevailed over the fourth seed in the end. In the other semi-final, Hari had to overcome Alan Moss who had eliminated third seed Bruce Smeath but had earlier been pushed back into second place in his first round group by his Cippenham Saxons team-mate Igor Liiko. Igor, however, lost to Singh in the quarter-final.

Other Cippenham players who progressed through their groups into the main event were Chris Collins and Peter Chipperton, the latter having scored a memorable victory over Elroy Hull.

Two other Cippenham players met in the final of the consolation event. Bharath Prasanna Kumar won the final battle against Akeel Mir and had earlier got through five tough games with Graham Trimming in the semi-final.

Maciej and Hari duly combined to successfully defend their doubles crown, giving them their third title together, having also won the event in 2015. Individually, this represents their fourth title each as Maciej won with Ricky Hardcastle in 2018 and Hari in 2020 with Bruce Smeath. In the semi-final, Maciej and Hari progressed against Gary Crick and Denise Rolfe while the beaten finalists Bruce Smeath and Parminder Singh beat Graham Trimming and Alan Moss deuce in the fifth.
