Joe beat his sparring partner to title

19 players participated in the Club’s annual Festive Grand Prix, our version of a Christmas Party (!) on Tuesday evening and some great matches ensued, despite the influence of mulled wine and mince pies.

​

To accommodate the large entry, the event was split into two sections, one of ten players and the other of nine. Each was played to a conclusion with the winners playing off for the title and all other places following in like fashion.

Top seed Shae Thakker won his section of the event with Bas Mocharrafie second and Zsolt Varga third. Zsolt’s progress included a great first stage win over Seb Nimier.

Second seed Joe Underwood also duly won his section with Graham Trimming runner-up and Elroy Hull third. Elroy was two games to the good against Joe in their final group match and, in retrospect, that was the only match in which Joe was unduly troubled all evening.

​

Joe and Shae have been practising together this season with Shae usually gaining the upper hand. This time it was all different as Joe triumphed in the final 3-0. Third place was taken by Graham who recovered from 10-8 down to defeat Bas 12-10 in the fifth game of a pulsating match while Elroy overcame Zsolt to finish fifth and Seb beat Holly Long for seventh place.
